Thuja Trees (Arborvitae) for Sale from Spring Hill Nurseries

Thuja trees or Arborvitae are versatile coniferous evergreens in the cypress family. Thuja plants boast a natural columnar or pyramidal shape with dense, scale-like foliage. Arborvitae are known as the ultimate living privacy fence, favored for their fast-growing nature, year-round thick greenery, and exceptional hardiness.

Planting and Growing Arborvitae

Thuja trees thrive in full sun to partial shade, and exhibit both pest resistance (including deer) and moderate drought resistance once established. Most varieties grow to between 10 and 60 feet tall in the distinctly tall, thin Arborvitae shape. Planting thujas brings benefits like privacy, shade, and wind blocking – a very utilitarian tree with low-maintenance needs.

Where to Grow Thuja Trees

  • Thrives in zones 3 – 8, depending on variety. Find your hardiness zone.
  • Plant in spots with full sun; at least 6 hours per day is best for density.
  • Space thujas 3 – 5 feet apart from each other for privacy hedges, and at least 10 feet away from structures.

When to Plant Thuja

  • Early spring or early fall to avoid heat stress.

Arborvitae Care and Maintenance

  • Watering: Moderately drought tolerant; water deeply once per week and more frequently during extreme heat and during the first year. Water daily for the first few weeks after planting.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a slow-release, high-nitrogen fertilizer in early spring. Avoid heavy fertilizer until established.
  • Pruning: Minimal pruning needed due to its naturally appealing shape. Light trimming in early autumn is optional.

How Fast Do Thuja Trees Grow?

Growth rates vary by variety, but fast-growing thujas can add up to 3 – 5 feet per year.
