Spring Hill Nurseries have developed an EZ Pruning System for Clematis: each plant is in the Red, Yellow, or Green pruning group, based on whether it blooms on old or new wood. Clematis in the Red category, sometimes referred to as Type I or Type A Clematis, bloom on old wood (last year’s growth), so they should only be pruned right after flowering, and only where needed.
