Rainbow's End Alberta Spruce (Picea glauca 'Rainbow's End') is a compact, dwarf evergreen conifer known for its two-toned seasonal color changes. Found as a natural mutation at Iseli Nursery in 1978, it keeps the same neat, pyramidal shape as a standard Dwarf Alberta Spruce while adding a distinct color shift twice a year, giving it a look all its own among evergreens.

Watch the Color Shift Through the Seasons

Spring growth on Rainbow's End emerges a soft, light green. By midsummer, a second flush of new growth turns the tree a bright lemon-yellow, creating real contrast against the older foliage underneath. As the weather cools, the color settles back into a deep, rich green for winter, giving the tree three distinct looks across the year.

Get a Tidy Shape Without the Work

This is a very slow-growing cultivar, adding just 3 to 6 inches a year, and it matures to 6 to 8 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. It naturally holds a dense, conical form without needing regular pruning to keep its shape, which makes it a low-effort choice for gardeners who still want a polished look. That slow, steady growth also means the tree keeps its proportions for years without crowding its surroundings.

Fit It Into Small Spaces With Confidence

Thanks to its compact size, Rainbow's End works well in rock gardens, formal entryways, mixed borders, or decorative patio containers. It is well-suited for USDA Zones 4 through 8, and full sun brings out the most vibrant yellow color in summer, though light afternoon shade is a good idea in especially hot climates to prevent scorch. Its small footprint also makes it a practical option for gardeners working with limited space.

Keep It Healthy With Simple Care

Plant Rainbow's End in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil, and water regularly during dry summer periods since it will not tolerate waterlogged conditions or severe drought. Like most Alberta spruces, it can attract spider mites, so give it good air circulation and occasionally rinse the foliage with a garden hose during summer to help keep pests in check.
