Variegated Liriope (Liriope muscari 'Variegata'), also widely known as Variegated Lilyturf or Monkey Grass, is an exceptionally tough, clumping evergreen perennial prized for its bright, multi-toned borders and problem-solving resilience. Its long, arching, strap-like green leaves are heavily ribboned with creamy-yellow or white margins, adding a permanent glow to dark, shaded corners of the landscape where color is otherwise hard to come by.
Brighten Shaded Corners of the YardVariegated Liriope grows in a dense, uniform, tufted mound, typically reaching 12 to 18 inches tall and spreading 15 to 24 inches wide. The creamy-yellow or white striping down each leaf gives it year-round presence in spots where plain green groundcovers tend to disappear into the shadows, keeping the planting bed visually interesting even without flowers.
Enjoy Late-Summer Flowers and Winter BerriesIn late summer, stiff upright spikes packed with small, lilac-lavender flowers rise above the variegated foliage, closely resembling grape hyacinths. These blooms eventually mature into decorative shiny black berries that persist into winter, giving the plant a second season of visual interest.
Plant It Without Worrying About SpreadUnlike aggressive running groundcovers such as Liriope spicata, this muscari species expands slowly by way of short underground stems. That means it forms tight, predictable clumps that will not invade neighboring turf or flower beds, so you can plant it right up against a lawn edge or garden border with confidence and know it will stay put.
Fill Problem Spots With Minimal EffortVariegated Liriope thrives anywhere from full sun to dense shade, including the dry shade beneath mature trees where turf grass often refuses to grow. It adapts easily to clay, loam, or sandy soils as long as they drain well, and it develops outstanding drought tolerance once established. It is reliably cold-hardy across USDA Zones 5 through 10, staying evergreen in milder climates. No routine pruning is needed, though mowing or shearing old foliage close to the ground in late winter clears away winter damage and encourages fresh spring color.
