  • The most purple-toned in the series
  • From Dr. Keith Zary's Northern Belle series

Hardy Magenta is a cultivar of the Northern Belle series, whose blooms take on more purple tones than the rest. Northern Belle is a groundbreaking new series that we have Dr. Keith Zary to thank for. While most crape myrtle cultivars can't survive in cold zones, Northern Belle cultivars put on an exceptional performance--it'll even rebloom reliably all the way up through zone 5 so long as it's heavily mulched through winter. When we trialed Hardy Magenta in zone 6, we didn't give it any winter protection. It died back to the ground and grew anew the next spring, for an extraordinary display of vivid, fluffy blooms, bringing new energy to the garden in midsummer. In California, where it didn't die back through winter, it grew to the taller end of the height range, perfect for a back border. Lagerstroemia indica 'GARzarnobemagen' PP31834
