Albo-marginata Hosta, most commonly known botanically as Hosta undulata 'Albomarginata,' is a classic, dependable perennial prized for its medium-green leaves framed by striking, wavy creamy-white margins. This hosta has earned its lasting popularity by combining reliable performance with foliage that brightens even the darkest corners of the garden. It is one of the first hostas to emerge each spring, giving gardeners an early sign that the growing season has begun.
Brighten Shaded Spaces With Crisp FoliageAlbo-marginata Hosta forms lush mounds of slightly wavy, oval foliage, with grey-green streaks marking where the white edge meets the green center. That contrast makes it easy to see even in low light, giving shaded borders and woodland pathways a lift without needing sun-loving plants that would struggle there. Massed together, the plants create a clean, low-growing ground cover with a consistent, tidy look.
Welcome Pollinators With Summer BloomsIn midsummer, Albo-marginata Hosta sends up tall scapes, 31 to 45 inches high, topped with pale lavender, funnel-shaped blooms. These flowers attract hummingbirds and bees, adding another layer of interest to a plant already known for its foliage.
Fit It Into Nearly Any Shade GardenReaching 12 to 24 inches tall and 18 to 40 inches wide, Albo-marginata Hosta works well as ground cover, a border planting, or a potted accent for shaded patios and containers. It also does a good job hiding fading foliage from spring bulbs as its own leaves unfurl, making it a practical companion plant as well as a standout on its own. It thrives across USDA Zones 3 through 9, which covers most of the country.
Keep Care Simple Year After YearPlant Albo-marginata Hosta in part shade to full shade, avoiding harsh afternoon sun that can scorch or bleach the white leaf margins. Give it rich, humusy, well-draining soil, and water regularly during the first season to help roots establish. Once settled, this hosta asks little beyond removing old foliage each spring and dividing mature clumps occasionally to keep them vigorous.
