Holden’s Red Rhododendron gives gardeners bold spring color, handsome evergreen foliage and a practical size for home landscapes. Bred by Shammarello Nursery in northern Ohio, it was developed with cold winters, clay soils and summer humidity in mind.
Count on hardy spring color
Holden’s Red brings bright rose-red flowers with a cool blue tone and a dark red blotch for added depth. The dense trusses cover the plant in early to midseason, usually around late May in suitable climates. With flower bud hardiness to -15°F, this rhododendron gives Zone 5 gardeners a strong option for reliable spring bloom.
Get beauty before and after bloom
This shrub sets colorful red buds in summer that remain through winter, giving you something to enjoy before the flowers open. After bloom, the deep green, glossy evergreen leaves keep the planting full and polished through every season. In cold weather, the leaves may curl inward, then return to form as temperatures rise.
Fit bold color into real garden spaces
At maturity, Holden’s Red reaches about 4–5' tall and 5–6' wide. That rounded, dense habit works well in foundation plantings, shaded borders and mixed shrub beds. It has enough size to anchor a planting, but it stays manageable near the home when sited properly.
