Unique, double blooms of very nearly black are a sensational sight in the late winter or very early spring landscape. They grow atop 18-24" stems for easy visibility and prefer full to partly shaded areas such as wooded areas. One of the first flowers to appear, it's sure to attract a lot of attention. Bring a couple of blossoms indoors and float them in a bowl of water for an eye-catching centerpiece. Deer resistant and drought tolerant. Helleborus orientalis 'Dashing Groomsmen'
Among the earliest blooms to emerge in early spring, Hellebores, also known as Lenten Roses, sometimes push up through late-season snow to show their pretty faces to the world. Hardy, vigorous and easy to grow, they prefer well-drained soil and will become drought-tolerant in later years. They add color and beauty to an otherwise bleak landscape, appearing before any of the traditional spring-blooming flowers. This deer-resistant shade perennial is available in a variety of colors, and looks marvelous in woodland areas and around shrubs and tree lines.
