A winning combination of bloom size and manageability, Kasugai features large flowers on a compact plant. Upward-facing blooms open flat in beautiful lavender-blue, with creamy white and yellow centers, and a faint nuance of midrib texture. Flowers are incredibly long-lasting on the vine, and contribute color and form to a mixed bouquet cut for a vase. A distinctive pointed tip punctuates the end of each sepal.

Plant this compact Clematis on a trellis or short obelisk, or pair with a taller Clematis, like Beautiful Bride, for a striking archway. For the collector of Japanese-bred plants, this Clematis pairs well with garden sculpture, irises, or ferns. Plant Kasugai with other blue-hued plants, or pair with a white Clematis for color contrast. We've also seen Kasugai married beautifully with plants of burgundy tones, forms such as Clematis Purpurea Plena Elegans or Grunwald. Clematis 'Kasugai'

In our EZ Pruning Guide, this variety is in the GREEN pruning category. These Clematis bloom on new vines that emerge from the ground each year or stems from near the bottom of older vines. Prune hard in the spring and as often as you like to encourage reblooming and keep the plant as tidy as you like.
