Their large blooms with their distinctive spurs open in great abundance over an exceptionally long period in late spring and early summer, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds in droves. They bloom on stems above mounds of lacy blue-green foliage, which can be cut back in summer to keep it fresh. Widely adaptable and easy to grow, but needs good drainage. Deer tend to avoid.
