For a totally unique take on shade-friendly ground cover, look no further than Berry Cascade Wintergreen. This surprising evergreen grows only 2-8" tall, but spreads up to a foot wide, making it a great choice for tucking between shrubbery, in a woodland garden or as a colorful accent in a rockery. In late spring, the glossy, rich green foliage is enhanced by the addition of small, drooping pinkish-white flowers that have a bell-shaped form, similar to that of blueberry blooms. While the flowers are charming, the fruit that follows is the real star. Bright red berries look amazing set against tidy mounds of evergreen leaves, drawing local wildlife to the area for an enchanting scene in late summer. The berries are surprisingly sweet and flavorful but you'll have to be observant as you'll have competition from the birds. Disease and pest resistant; prefers acidic soil.
