Architectural interest is easy when you've got a great lupine in the midst. With its large spikes of unique bicolor blooms, Blacksmith is absolutely a great lupine. Strong and sturdy stems hold these big spikes straight, so even if you've got it behind some low–growing perennials, you'll have no problem drawing attention to this variety. It's meant to bridge the gap between your spring and summer show—blooming around late spring to early summer—but we've had success cutting it back and getting more blooms, too. That's good news for the cut flower fan. You can add its royal hues to class up your cut flower arrangement, and you may still get a second show. Blacksmith grows about 2–3', which makes it a good mid–border perennial. However, since it's so easy and fast to grow, and it's an exceptional naturalizer, you'd have no problem planting this en masse. All those bicolor flowers look extraordinary in a big group. The butterflies and pollinators will be pleased for the treat, yet deer tend to stay away from lupine. Lupinus polyphyllus 'Blacksmith' PPAF
