This candy cane colored hibiscus has double bicolored red and pink blooms with green serrated leaves that provide refreshing bloom from mid to late-summer into fall, at the perfect time - when the garden can lack color and the temperatures are muggy. Considered a medium sized shrub, Peppermint Smoothie matures at 8' tall, but because the flowers are sterile it produces none of the messy seed pods that plague gardeners with the standard Hibiscus syriacus. Highly adaptable, this flowering shrub is perfect for hedges, garden beds, borders and mass plantings. Preferring a cozy fit when grown in a container, place a single specimen on a sunny patio or deck. Grow this lovely hibiscus and be rewarded with dozens of blooms year after year while adding a tropical flair to the landscape and attracting butterflies from miles around. Deer tend to avoid. Hibiscus syriacus 'DS04PS' PP26551
Hibiscus syriacus, also known as Rose of Sharon, is handy if you love the look of tropical flowers, but need something more reliable in a cold climate. Rose of Sharon is woody, and these hard stems won't die back in the winter, standing up to cold weather better. The other big reason gardeners love syriacus is when they want a hibiscus tree. It naturally grows into a vase shape, but the woody stems can be manipulated into a nice tree shape. It's gorgeous architectural interest for a more formal landscape.
