Floribunda roses are set apart from grandiflora and classic hybrid tea roses due to their abundant flowering properties. Loosely translated from a phrase meaning "many flowering," Floribunda roses are a cross of polylantha roses, a heavily-blooming species of roses, and classic hybrid teas, which are beloved for their elegant shape and sweet-but-not-too-heavy fragrance. Many floribunda roses have an "old-fashioned," full, and ruffled shape, well-recognized among hybrid tea roses and English garden roses. They tend to follow the coloring of hybrid teas, and are available in nearly every color that has been cultivated in hybrid tea roses. Floribundas are the perfect combination of classic shape, major color, light fragrance, and incredible floral yield, with multiple blooms per stem.

Floribundas are one of the shorter rose varieties, growing to a height of three to four feet. Hybrid tea roses are their taller relative, growing to a height of up to six feet tall. Their not-too-tall growing habit lends floribunda roses spectacular credit in the container garden, or among shorter gardens. Although these won't be a wonderful pick for a tall hedge, floribunda bushes fill out beautifully and can definitely serve as a statement piece in the garden.

The best time to plant roses is in the spring, after any threat of frost has passed. For areas of the deep south, that last frost date will fall in March, while gardeners in the Midwest should wait until around Mother's Day to plant their roses. In colder northern climates, the best time to plant roses will be at the beginning of June. If you're planting bare root roses, you'll want to get them in the ground while the plants are still dormant, but potted roses are a bit more forgiving, since they're already growing in their pots.

Floribundas are a later-blooming rose, flowering from early summer to fall. They flower freely and continuously, so there's a good chance that you will see floribunda roses all season long. Unlike perennials with a single or double blooming time, floribundas flower repeatedly. Deadheading spent flowers encourages repeat blooms, too.

Floribunda roses perform best when allowed 24 to 30 inches of spread. Packing flowers too tightly can increase susceptibility to mildew, but you won't need huge swaths of space to grow floribunda roses. Plant floribundas in an orderly line for a low-lying hedge to divide your space, or plant a few varieties together to create a splash of color in your landscape. Floribundas also perform well in containers, or in front of taller or vining roses.

The short answer--yes, Floribunda roses are easy to grow. These aren't your grandmother's finicky roses, and they don't need to be babied like old fashioned varieties. Floribunda roses are very adaptable to all types of soil, as well as a wide range of climate conditions. Simply choose good, well-draining soil and a site that receives plenty of sun, and Floribundas are just another easy perennial.
