Every gardener loves the sweet
fragrance and lush blooms of lilacs.
These elegant shrubs are a highlight
of late spring. But sadly, the
delectable blooms are gone all too
quickly, leaving you pining for that
perfume until next year.
Well, not anymore! Spring Hill
Nurseries® has a special treat just for
lilac lovers like you—Josee Lilac—
a truly amazing reblooming lilac!
While most lilacs bloom for only
a couple weeks, Josee keeps going
and going, offering up a cascade of
gorgeous, heavenly-scented flowers
intermittently from late spring until frost!
This miracle of floral beauty is the result of
painstaking work by expert breeders. To achieve such
a long blooming period, they crossbred three different
lilac types over the course of many
years. The results speak for
themselves. Josee is fast becoming
THE lilac to grow—even more
popular than traditional French
lilacs.
An American Tradition
Native to Europe and Asia, lilacs
(Syringa) include about 20 species
of deciduous, flowering shrubs
and are members of the olive
family. Lilacs have been enjoyed
by American gardeners since the
mid 1750s. Especially popular in
New England, where they were
sometimes called “pipe trees,”
they were grown in America’s
first botanical gardens. Both George Washington
and Thomas Jefferson grew them. Today, there are
over 1,000 varieties of lilacs, but none can compare
to Josee the amazing reblooming lilac—giving you a
whole season’s worth of beauty and fragrance.
Hundreds of lavender-pink
florets appear on
long, luxuriant panicles.
After the first heavy
bloom in late spring,
given adequate moisture,
Josee will continue to
flower intermittently all
summer long until frost. All the while, the heady sweet
fragrance attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. At just
4-6' tall with a 4-5' spread, this delightful dwarf variety
is perfect for borders, hedges or as a stand-alone specimen.
Simply wonderful for bouquets!
The Heady Perfume You Adore! Aside from roses, there is
no flower as aromatic as
lilac. And Josee is simply
unbeatable when it comes
to tantalizing fragrance.
Just a single bouquet of
the lush panicles will
fill an entire room with
perfume! They add both
visual and fragrant impact
to any mixed arrangement.
Dry the blooms for
charming sachets—perfect
for dresser drawers or as
gifts for your friends and family!
Attracts Hummingbirds and
Butterflies—but Not Deer! Josee is great for attracting colorful,
beneficial wildlife to your property.
Beautiful butterflies and pollinating
bees can’t resist the fragrant flowers.
Ruby-throated hummingbirds are
also connoisseurs of lilac nectar. However,
one animal that won’t visit your lilacs is deer!
Easy-Care Beauty that Lasts for Decades Josee is tough, deer resistant and hardy in zones 2-9.
For best results, simply plant in full sun in well-draining,
humus-rich soil. To encourage more plentiful blooms, you
can remove spent flowers using a pair of hand pruners.
Josee may be easily trimmed and shaped as you desire.
One of our favorite places for these lilacs is near the kitchen
window—the sweet perfume drifts right in on
the summer breeze! Like trees, lilac bushes can live for
hundreds of years, so you may look forward to a lifetime
of lilac-scented summers!

Last year I bought a "Josee Reblooming Lilac" from Springhill. It has now been in the ground for two years. The plant has grown to ten times its original size! Like my other lilac bushes it bloomed in the spring. Now, as our Mediterranean weather pattern heats up into the 90's it is still adding new growth at a prodigious rate. In addition to the foliar growth I am seeing many partially opened and un-opened flower panicles appearing. This lilac is amazing. It is hard to get lilacs to perform their best in our dry, hot California climate. If I were to recommend only one Lilac to a fellow Zone 9 Gardener, it would be this one. This little plant is out performing the Lilacs that were planted when the house was first built in 1930. A hardy, constant performer.
