I bought some of these last year and man do they grow fast!!! I live in an area where not much grows but weeds. They have covered my trelles, bald spots, edges. They climb trees. My property is teaming with them. It is incredibly beautiful. They are easy to trim and easy to direct, if you know what you are doing!
The only way you can control these from taking over is to grow it as a standard in the middle of a lawn. The mowing will prevent runners and the height keeps the branches from touching ground and rooting. DO NOT under any circumstances plant this any place you cannot mow!!!
We planted this plant in the pot. We put it in a flower pot first then into the gound. It keeps the roots from traveling and have not had a problem with shoots coming up all over.
Do not plant near house or pool...overtakes EVERYTHING. Came out under pool and ruined liner...had to replace siding...choked out my 12ft pampas grass. It's been 3 years and I'm still trying to get rid of them!!
I bought this one and the yellow trumpet one. Yes, they are nice and the hummers love them,BUT very invasive. We cut them down last yr., since they were coming up everywhere! We're now trying to eradicate all the extras,and good luck to us----doubt if it will ever happen in our life-time.The hanging pods are part of the problem, but it travels underground also---two evils to control. Not for the weak of heart or body.Right up there w/ivy.
As the first reviewer noted, this is a very vigorous climber. On the positive side, it blooms almost continuously once established and is a quick and beautiful cover for an unsightly fence or shed. Pruning holds it in check and the holdfasts aren't damaging. Just be sure it isn't sending tendrils in between an eave and the gutter, for example, unless you want the growing stem to slowly pry the gutter away from the eave. I've grown this plant for years and always appreciate it.
Very resilent summer bloomer. They can be quite overbearning but the also cover up my chain link fence nicely and hummingbirds love them. If you don't want them popping up anywhere else, you'll have to control the seed pods.
