Planting Requirements: In containers, use a water retentive soil-less media that has good water holding capacity. Vigorous grower that requires good fertilization practices and ample amounts of water to produce fruit year round.
Soil Requirements: Well drained, nutrient rich for best results.
Growth Rate: moderate
Unique Characteristics: Fruit is coveted by California chefs for its haunting sweetness. Used to flavor everything from fresh fish to lemon sherbet. Hardier than most lemons, extremely adaptable as a container plant and to northern house conditions. Will flower and bear fruit year round. Bears fruit in 1-3 years.
Pruning: No pruning needed except for interfering branches.
Additional Information: In Northern climates, plants should be moved outdoors during temperate months, then moved inside at the onset of freezing weather. This will encourage more fruit production.
Results may vary - no kidding! About three months ago, my Mom bought three little plants, each about 6" high. She kept one, gave one to my Grama, and one to me. We all wanted to have a contest to see who could grow the best tree.
Mom's plant is about 18" tall now. It's beautiful, with dark green leaves, and more sprouting every day. Grama's tree is about 12" high, just as beautiful. Mine has not grown an inch. It's still 6" high - not more than two sticks with a grand total of 8 leaves. And my two sticks are flowering like crazy, and even producing little tiny lemons that grow to be about the size of your thumbnail before falling off.
Wonderful trees! We were a little doubtful because we live in Montana . . .but they've been a wonderful addition to us all.
Incidentally, which one of us is winning the contest??
I just received this (along with the dwarf orange and the dwarf blueberry plants) today, and the lemon plant has several blossoms on it, a few tiny (several mm long) lemons and one lemon that's 1 1/2" long! The blossoms smell incredible and I can't believe it's already producing fruit. The tree is about 12" tall and leafy; not one of those depressing bare root, dormant ones you sometimes get from places like this. My plant is about 3-4 years old and the flowers that are blooming smell so great. I just can't get over how wonderful the aroma is when you walk past it or walk into the same room. So far the lemon tree is growing what looks like little lemons. They are green right now but of course are no where near being mature. I bring my tree in from outdoors when it gets pretty cold outside. If just for the aroma this plant is great! I can't wait until the lemons mature.
I purchased this tree last year and it has been great! I have to move it in for the winter in my area. I place it under a grow blub during the day since it only gets sun in the morning. I've noticed it loses it's leaves when it needs water or if I water it too much. Once I found that balance it produces fruit like crazy. When I replant it I will mix in sand for easier drainage since I like to water weekly =)
I purchased this plant a couple of months ago and it is doing great. I found it very convenient to but the kit which came with more then enough potting soil and an adequate starter pot. It has produced several new leaves and looks very green and healthy. My plant gets plenty of light and all I have done is water it and rotate the pot a quarter turn for even growth once a week .
We received this tree in April of 2008 . It has not grown at all. It is barely still alive the leaves keep dropping off , but has produced four very small blossoms this month. For us a very poor plant. The lime tree we received at the same time is doing very well and growing as expected.
Just wanted to say thank you for a bit of home. I was born and raised in sunny California with a lemon tree in the yard. In MI no such thing available, until your lemon tree . I can not stop smelling it, just wonderful. The tree already has lemons on it! I recommend this to anyone who loves lemons!
