my zebra grass was given to me several years ago and i have moved twice since therefor, I've had it in 3 different locations. I've always had it in a sunny, well drained location. In each place it thrived even though I had to cut it back (rootball) each move. it's easily over 8' tall without the plumes. i cut down in early winter to about 6" above the ground. this is a very hardy plant as long as it is planted in a sunny well drained area. mine is planted on a slighty sloped area
I have had 3 plants for around 4 years. One is at least 7 feet tall. The others I have learned, need more sun. With new trees covering them, they seem to thrive on sun. But the one, is beyond spectacular. Remeber people, Perennials are like this, 1st year they sleep, 2nd year they creep, but the 3rd year they LEAP! I am about to order a few more now that I know how to grow them.
I ordered 2 of these with great hopes 2 years ago. One never took off the first spring (nor did my free replacement). The other is still very small now - very thin and no real height to it. I'm still holding out hope though!
While the Zebra came in a somewhat tall container it has not grown very much. I was hoping it would have grown more by now. I have other maiden grasses that grew very fast.
This grass is exquisite. I purchased 3 of them years ago from Spring Hill. They love full sun. Once established they tolerate drought since their roots are seriously deep. My plants are all over 7 feet tall and when they bloom in the fall they're over 8 feet tall. They need space but if you want to establish some privacy, this is the grass for you.
I bought this tiny plant for my daughter in Northern Illinois. In 3 years it is over 7 feet tall, full and gorgeous! She has a bit sandy soil and lots of sun. Easy to care for! A beautiful border to her backyard patio!
6 or 7 of Zebra Grass clumps were planted by the pool of the house, which I purchased 2 years ago. This grass puts on a show year-round. In the summer, very tall and hardy with attractive "zebra" stripes. During the winter, it turns a creamy tan and retains its shape, even after a heavy snow fall. Also, it acts as a great privacy fence.
